Siding first, gutters after. Siding and its flashing need to run behind the gutter system’s drip edge for water to shed correctly, and hanging gutters first just means taking them down again. When we handle siding and gutter replacement as one project, the sequencing — and the flashing between the two — is built in rather than bolted on.

Capacity — a 6-inch gutter carries roughly 40% more water than a 5-inch. Do gutters prevent ice dams?
Not by themselves — ice dams start with heat escaping through the roof, melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave.
